It isn't unusual for a toner cartridge to fit more than one brand and model of printer. At least back in the '90s, many printer manufactures would buy the ';engine'; or guts of the printer from Canon and therefore they'd all use the same toner cartridge.
In this case, though, from what I see on the web the Brother uses bottles of toner and a separate replaceable drum, whereas the HP 53A is the conventional all-in-one cartridge. So, the answer is no, unless you want to break open the HP cartridge and pour out the toner powder. This might work fine, or it might not.Will an HP 53A Toner fit a Brother HL-2040?
Brother HL-2040 use TN-350 toner. It can not be interchangeably used with HP. Note that all vendors depend on the sale of accessories to survive.
No, the contacts are different on the HP, I don't think I would try, if it gets stuck you could have another problem, if you want to save money find a re manufactured toner cartridge for your printer, hope this helped and good luck.
